Any Pool or Beach Suggestions?

Posted on

Ok, perfect time of year to address this. Condition, Condition, Condition……need I say more?

To ensure great curls while poolside or at the beach, bringing along a Conditioner is a Must.

What kind……

Always bring a spray bottle with fresh water mixed with Conditioner and I often bring an additional Hair mask if I am by the Ocean- it seems to dry the curls the most- the mask really protects the hair from the sun and salt.

Quick Way

Buy any leave in spray bottle Conditioner
Buy a hair masque

Products
Miracle 7 leave-in mist
Devachan hair mask- heaven and hair

I Don’t Want To Wash My Hair Everyday!

Posted on

Ok, so you do not need to wash your hair every day.  Most curlyheads think it is a must , but not so…

You do however need to invest in  nice spray bottle, so you can make a nice mixture of  Conditioner and water to wake up the curls.  For little curlytots, they can select the bottle- make it fun for them or even put their favorite stickers on it- anything to make them sit tight while their hair is styled.

The water to Conditioner mix is probably 80 (Water)-20 (Conditioner)

Just lightly spray to revive the curls, then style,  if you need a little more hold add some product, like gel or mousse.

My hair Takes Forever To Dry! Help!

Great Job!! The longer your hair holds moisture and takes to dry that means the healthier the hair and hair shaft are.  So this means you have been following my curly hair instructions!! Yey!

Now to Speed up the Drying time you can use the paper towels or soft cloth to squeeze out the excess water again after you apply styling product- just be careful not to disrupt the curls. You can also use a dryer, either one from a hair salon-a hood one (that goes over your whole head), or a diffuser attachment on a blow drier.

For Kids, especially little ones it may be worth it to get a salon type chair with a hood attachment. This way you can just have your little one sit or stand on the chair with the hood blowing, they think it is fun and stay put… at least long enough to get the dampness out.  This is what I use, especially in the winter,r and it works great.  They can be costly so look for a used one or a salon that is swapping out for new ones to look for a deal.

If you are using thediffuser still be awair of the curl pattern and try to blow the air down the hair shaft to avoid frizz- from crown to the ends.  I also recommend the diffusers with extra spikes on them to get the air to the inside of the hair- which is what usually takes the longest to dry. If you can just get that done then allow the rest to air dry.

I Need More Hold

Posted on

ok, so the conditioner is not enough, that’s fine, some people want a lot more control over the curls.  This is where product variety and different formulations will have a great impact.  Personally for my children especially the young ones, I do not like the crunchy look- ie what you get with heavy gels and mouses.  Ouidad makes a nice gel type formulation which I love, it is called Climate control, it is nice and slippery not very sticky, so it can be worked in Fast- especially with a wiggly little one your hands.  Devachan makes a light gel called Angel, this is great if you want a lot of hold- like for a wedding or event.

One important factor, try to use a gel that is clear in color, it acts like a clear coat of nail polish; clear will create the most shine, and typically people want shiny defined curls.

I recently was told about a product called, brace yourself…. Gorilla Snot, yup that’s the name, and I saw its results,  curls looked beautiful, I have to try it out and give feedback.

For Long Botticelli like Adult curls, like mine, my all time favorite product isHerbal Essence Totally Twisted Mousse.  This is one of the products that made me Love my curls, I have been using it since the late 90′s- any time I stray away thinking I have found something better I always go back.  As my friend would say, if the product is in my Graveyard of products, it will always resurrect.

I Have the Conditioner Now What?

First of all Congratulations!! This is the firststep to beauticul curls.

Wet the hair and use the conditioner to wash the scap scrub well and rinse to get any gunk or build up off the scalp

Next Condition, do not slather the scalp, just the hair.  At this point, use your fingers to comb through the hair, releasing any knots.  Do not use a brush or comb not matter how tempting, your fingers will be perfect

When all the knots are out, start styling the hair – either in the shower or tub, making sure it is soaking wet, this is when you can get a glimpse of what the hair will look like dry.  Always smoothing down the cutical.  You want to help the curls all find the right path- think of yarn, you want all the fibers to be moving towards the right direction, Typically Down – to avoid Frizz.  please write me if this is not making sense so I can explain.  At this point you can scrunch the hair up, when it is still soaking wet- to get the spring factor stimulated. Now you are done styling, do not continue to touch the hair, even if you think it is Frizzing out, just ignore it.

When you get out of the shower or bath, take a paper towel, or soft old tee-shirt to get the excess water out of the hair.  Do this by scrunching the hair up and holding it towards the scalp for a sec to absorb extra water out. Do this once per hair section, again if you do it repeatedly  you will be creating frizz.

Now just leave the hair to air dry and watch the beautiful cherub curls your child was lucky enough to be born magically appear!!! Send me pics!!!

What Conditioner?

Ok there are many conditioners I use, all a slight bit different, however it Must be a conditioner …have I nailed that home yet?? A cheap drugstore brand conditioner is better than any expensive salon shampoo – even if your stylist says so!

My all around favorite is Devachan One Conditioner, I like the scent and is super moisturizing with all natural ingredients and is not tested on animals, (i am a huge animal lover). This is all I travel with, and use it like I stated earlier, To Wash , Condition, andStyle.

This product is slightly more expensive, around $30 for a huge bottle, salon size, my whole family uses it so it is worth it for us

For something cheaper, that can be found easily that smells good, I recommend Herbal Essences Totally  Twisted- use it the same way.

What should I use to Wash my Childs hair?

Posted on

This is such a common question, I hear it all the time, and yes, i will give a list of products that I love, and all natural ones that are good for the environment too.

The #1 question I always ask is, “ do you shampoo your child’s hair? The answer is usually “yes” ! AHA here we have the major problem…..

Curly hair does not hold moisture the way other hair types do, and therefore should  NOT BE WASHED WITH SHAMPOO!!!

Next question is usually after a lot of laughter “Then how do I wash my Childs hair?”

the answer is, “With Conditioner!” Yes Conditioner!!! It can wash the scalp and clean the hair, just as well as shampoo does, but it does not strip and dry the hair the way shampoo does, EVEN shampoo made for CURLy HAIR!!

You can use the same bottle of conditioner to Wash, Condition, and Style your child’s hair!  I know this may seem crazy to you, and so backwards, especially if you do not have curly hair because you can probably wah your hair three times a day and still be greasy…. just not the same for us curly heads.

Actually, I think my son has only had shampoo in his hair maybe 2-3 times his whole life! He is now 3!  We always wash with Conditioner!
